Suzuki Sidekick was launched in 1989. The compact 4-
wheel-drive sport-utility vehicle, had a 5-speed manual
transmission as standard and a 3-speed automatic transmission
was optional. A 2-wheel-drive model was added in
1990. Sidekicks were powered by a 1.6 liter engine that
made 80 horsepower.
Replacing the Sidekick in 1999, the Suzuki Vitara, had a
longer body, more interior space and fresh styling. Vitara’s
are powered by a 1.6 liter engine that made 97 horsepower.
Introduced in 1986, this little mighty mite was Japan’s
answer to the Jeep. The 66 horsepower 1.3 liter engine
came only with a 5-speed manual transmission. An ondemand,
part-time 4-wheel-drive system was standard.
Manual-locking front hubs also were standard, but dealers
could install automatic-locking hubs.
